Cabinet Confirms Structural Concerns for Erdington Library: No Timeline for Repairs

What's happened

During a recent Cabinet meeting, concerns were formally raised regarding the building structure of Erdington Library. The Council indicated that maintenance costs will be integrated into the future Capital Programme, though no immediate timeline for repairs was provided. The main library building is currently closed for health and safety reasons, with only a temporary Book Pick and Drop service available from the Community Room.

What it means for Erdington and Pype Hayes

Erdington Library is a cornerstone of our community, providing essential services, literacy support, and digital access for residents across Erdington and Pype Hayes. The lack of a clear timeline for repairs means continued disruption for families, students, and elderly residents who rely on this facility. Without a firm commitment, there is a real risk that the building could deteriorate further, potentially leading to higher repair costs or permanent closure.

Where I stand

As your Reform UK councillor, I believe our community assets must be protected and maintained. While I understand the Council faces financial pressures, kicking the can down the road on essential repairs is a false economy. The Council might argue that integrating costs into the future Capital Programme is the responsible approach, but without a timeline, it's just an empty promise. We need a clear, costed plan and a firm date for when Erdington Library will fully reopen to the public. I will continue to press the administration for answers and action.

What happens next

My office is actively monitoring the situation and will be submitting formal scrutiny questions to the Cabinet Member responsible. We will also be engaging with local community groups to ensure the pressure remains on the Council to deliver these vital repairs. I will keep residents updated on any developments regarding the Capital Programme and the library's status.

Questions we're asking

As the Reform UK opposition, I am putting these questions to the decision-maker on residents' behalf:

  • Can the Cabinet Member provide a specific date by which the structural assessment of Erdington Library will be completed?
  • What is the estimated cost of the required repairs, and has this funding been ring-fenced within the future Capital Programme?
  • What interim measures are being considered to expand library services in Erdington while the main building remains closed?
  • If the repairs are delayed beyond the next financial year, what is the contingency plan to prevent further deterioration of the building?
