Save Digbeth: Demand Guaranteed Compensation and a No Net Loss Policy for Birmingham's Cultural Venues
Digbeth — the cultural heart of Birmingham's independent nightlife and music scene — is under direct threat from Network Rail's £1.75 billion Midlands Rail Hub viaduct extension. Up to 50 independent businesses face demolition and compulsory purchase. XOYO, Luna Springs, Club Colette, Mama Roux's, and The Night Owl — venues that have put Birmingham on the cultural map — could be wiped off it entirely. These businesses employ hundreds of local people, host emerging artists, and generate millions for Birmingham's nighttime economy. Their loss would be irreversible — not just for Digbeth, but for the city's entire cultural identity. We, the undersigned, demand that Network Rail, the Midlands Rail Hub Alliance, and Birmingham City Council take immediate action to guarantee: 1. A fully-funded relocation and compensation package for every affected business — covering premises, downtime, lost trade, equipment, and goodwill built up over years. No business should face financial ruin because of infrastructure development. 2. A binding "No Net Loss" policy for cultural and nighttime economy spaces in the redevelopment zone — meaning no cultural venue is demolished without a guaranteed, equivalent replacement space being secured first. 3. Meaningful community consultation before any compulsory purchase orders are issued — not a box-ticking exercise after the plans are finalised, but a genuine seat at the table for the people whose livelihoods and community are at stake. 4. Full transparency on mitigation plans — Network Rail must publish its compensation strategy, relocation proposals, and timeline before — not after — the Summer 2027 consultation. Digbeth did not become the cultural capital of the Midlands by accident. It happened because independent people took risks, invested their lives, and built something real. Put Brummies First: End Birmingham's Housing Crisis
Birmingham is at breaking point. Our city faces an existential crisis driven by a bankrupt council, a housing emergency, and communities being destroyed by unregulated Supported Exempt Accommodation (SEAs) and HMOs. The facts speak for themselves: - 36,500 families on the Birmingham housing waiting list, many trapped in temporary or inadequate accommodation. - 1,011 vacant council properties sitting empty, costing the council over £3 million in lost rent. - Areas like Stockland Green suffering over 380 reported crimes in a single month, driven by the unchecked spread of SEAs and HMOs. - Family homes being converted into high-density units by out-of-town providers with zero commitment to local community cohesion. - House prices stagnating, schools emptying, and working families forced to flee their own neighbourhoods. - A £2.2 billion Ladywood regeneration scheme threatening to demolish up to 1,900 homes and displace long-standing communities. We, the undersigned, demand that Birmingham City Council and relevant authorities take immediate action on the following: 1. Publish a Rogue Landlord and Housing Provider Register — name and shame the negligent housing providers and rogue landlords who are carving up our family homes and destroying our communities. 2. Halt all new HMO and SEA conversions without localised community consent — no more family homes turned into high-density units without the people who live there having a say. 3. Implement a 15-year local connection housing policy — social housing in Birmingham must be prioritised for Brummies who can prove a verified local connection to the city of at least 15 years. If you have lived here, worked here, paid your taxes here, and raised your family here, you should not be pushed to the back of the queue. Social housing is a public asset, built and maintained through the collective efforts and tax contributions of this city's workforce. It is time to put long-standing Brummies first. Object to HMO Planning Application at 128 Tyburn Road (Ref: 2026/01309/PA)
**I am formally objecting to this proposal on the following grounds, which are of urgent concern to our neighbourhood:** * **Antisocial Behaviour:** High-density HMOs along this corridor have repeatedly become a magnet for antisocial behaviour, creating an environment of fear for neighbouring residents. * **Criminal Activity:** Residents have consistently reported drug dealing and other criminal activities linked to similar intensive housing sites in the immediate vicinity. * **Strain on Police Resources:** These properties create persistent demand on our already stretched local police services, diverting resources away from the wider community. **The Proposal:** Planning application 2026/01309/PA seeks the conversion of 128 Tyburn Road into a 7-bedroom HMO plus two additional bedsits. As your Ward Councillor, I believe this proposal is an unacceptable intensification of the site that will worsen these existing issues. **Additional Concerns:** - **Parking & Traffic:** Tyburn Road is a major, congested transport corridor. This development will generate far more parking demand than the existing single-family dwelling can accommodate, adding further pressure to our already congested streets. - **Loss of Family Housing:** We are losing a vital family home to high-density shared accommodation, further undermining community stability. - **Community Balance:** My office has been involved in extensive casework regarding the cumulative impact of such developments. We simply cannot support further high-occupancy dwellings on this corridor. I have submitted my formal objection to the City Council.
