Protecting Our Neighbourhoods: The Fight Against Unregulated HMO Expansion

The Challenge Facing Erdington

Our ward is currently facing a significant number of planning applications for Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and supported exempt accommodation. Most recently, the application at 128 Tyburn Road (Ref: 2026/01309/PA) has highlighted the growing anxiety among residents regarding the impact of high-density housing on local antisocial behaviour and community cohesion.

Why This Matters

As a member of the Licensing and Public Protection Committee and the Homes Overview and Scrutiny Committee, I see the data behind these trends. We are not just talking about individual planning decisions; we are talking about the cumulative impact on our streets. When too many properties are converted without adequate support or oversight, it places an unsustainable strain on local services and changes the very fabric of our neighbourhoods.

What This Means for Residents

  1. Scrutiny: I am using my position on the council to demand greater accountability and stricter adherence to planning policies that prevent the over-concentration of these facilities.
  2. Your Voice: Petitions and formal objections are vital. They provide the evidence base we need to challenge these applications during the planning process.
  3. Action: If you are concerned about a specific application, please ensure your formal objection is submitted to the Local Planning Authority. My office is here to support you in navigating this process.

We must ensure that Erdington remains a place where families can thrive, rather than a corridor for unregulated development.
