Your ward in numbers: Pype Hayes economy and skills update
By Cllr Danny Carter · 20 October 2026
Understanding how our local economy is doing helps us see how our neighbourhood compares to the rest of the city. ## The key numbers * 8.5% of residents in Pype Hayes are claiming out-of-work benefits, which is lower than the Birmingham average of 9.9%. * 615 people in Pype Hayes are currently claiming out-of-work benefits. * 10.2% of residents in Erdington are claiming out-of-work benefits, which is higher than the Pype Hayes rate. * 1455 people in Erdington are on out-of-work benefits. * 76120 people are claiming out-of-work benefits across the whole of Birmingham. * £10068158 was spent by Birmingham City Council on place, prosperity and sustainability in July 2026. ## What this means for you The claimant count shows how many people are receiving unemployment support. It is encouraging to see that Pype Hayes currently has a lower rate of people claiming these benefits compared to both the Erdington area and the wider city of Birmingham. These figures help us track the local job market and identify where we need to focus on skills and training. Council spending on prosperity and sustainability supports projects that improve our local environment and generate new opportunities for jobs and housing. This investment aims to make our city a better place to live and work. ## How to have your say You can report local issues at https://dannycarter.org.uk/report or contact Cllr Danny Carter's office. ## Where the figures come from ONS Claimant Count via Nomis (https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/datasets/ucjsa).
